Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy session at RegenLife

RegenLife Centers offers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Cincinnati, OH, Montgomery, OH, and Edgewood, KY for patients managing chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and stress. Integrated into Dr. Zeeshan Tayeb's whole-person care approach, CBT is structured, evidence-based talk therapy that identifies the thoughts and habits driving distress and gives you practical skills to change them. Most major insurance plans accepted at all three locations.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

How you read a sensation can change the sensation itself. A tight back understood as damage feels different from the same tightness understood as a muscle that needs to move. Cognitive behavioral therapy works in that gap, on the loops where thoughts and actions keep a problem going, whether that problem is pain, anxiety, or broken sleep.

CBT is a short, focused form of therapy with a strong research record. Instead of open-ended exploration, it identifies the specific thoughts and habits driving distress and gives you practical skills to change them. The American Psychological Association describes it as one of the most studied and effective psychological treatments available, with results that tend to last after therapy ends.

At RegenLife, CBT sits alongside our work on the nervous system and chronic pain. For a lot of patients, it is what makes the rest of their care stick.

How CBT Differs From General Behavioral Therapy

Our behavioral health care covers the broader family of approaches that target actions and habits. CBT is a specific method within that family. It adds a focus on thoughts. You learn to catch the automatic interpretations that shape how you feel, then check them against the evidence.

Behavioral Health (Broad)

  • Targets actions and habits
  • Broad range of approaches
  • Flexible duration and goals
  • Multiple therapy modalities

CBT (Specific)

  • Adds focus on thoughts and beliefs
  • Structured, goal-directed sessions
  • Defined course of treatment
  • Skills practiced between visits

Conditions CBT Helps

CBT has strong evidence for anxiety, depression, and stress. It also helps two problems we treat often at RegenLife:

Anxiety & Stress

  • • Generalized anxiety
  • • Chronic stress
  • • Depression
  • • Panic and worry
  • • Emotional dysregulation

Chronic Pain

  • • Nervous-system sensitization
  • • Pain catastrophizing
  • • Fear-avoidance patterns
  • • Low back and neck pain
  • • Fibromyalgia

Insomnia (CBT-I)

  • • Difficulty falling asleep
  • • Frequent waking
  • • Sleep anxiety
  • • Pain-disrupted sleep
  • • Chronic insomnia

For insomnia, a version called CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is now recommended ahead of sleep medication for most patients — which matters because poor sleep amplifies pain and slows recovery.

The CBT Process

CBT is structured and measurable from the first session:

1

Goal Setting

You and your clinician set clear, specific goals at the start — so every session has a direction.

2

Active Sessions

Sessions are active and practical. You learn to track thoughts, test beliefs against evidence, and identify patterns keeping the problem in place.

3

Between-Visit Practice

Skills are practiced between visits — changing routines, challenging automatic thoughts, and building new habits that reduce distress.

4

Defined Course

Most courses run for a defined number of weeks rather than open-ended, with measurable progress tracked throughout.

CBT and the Pain–Brain Connection

Pain comes from the nervous system, not only from the tissue. That is why a therapy aimed at thoughts and behavior can bring physical pain down. CBT works well next to our nervous-system and BrainTap work and movement-based care, which gives you more than one way to settle an overactive system.

Pain Processing

CBT changes how the brain interprets pain signals, reducing the amplification caused by fear, avoidance, and negative expectation.

Fear-Avoidance Cycle

Patients learn to break the cycle where fear of pain leads to avoidance, which leads to deconditioning and more pain over time.

Nervous-System Regulation

Targeted thought-work and behavioral activation help calm an overactive sympathetic nervous system — the same goal as our BrainTap and movement programs.

Sleep Restoration

CBT-I addresses the behaviors and beliefs that perpetuate insomnia, improving sleep quality without medication — critical for pain recovery.
